Debbie Cassels
Debbie is an established Scottish artist, regularly exhibiting and selling her work throughout Scotland and beyond. She enjoys working with bright vibrant colours and texture, using acrylic and mixed media.
Her inspiration is through observation of her surroundings. Living in the west coast of Scotland, it is difficult not to be inspired by the sunsets, sea, islands, harbours and beaches. She also loves the challenge of portraiture and finds knowing the sitter is essential to bringing out the character and quirks of a personality.
Debbie always starts her paintings with an interesting base, using various techniques to produce backgrounds and texture which inform the narrative of the piece.
Debbie was a student of Robinwood Art School, Ayr. One of her first successes was winning the Willa Revie Award for her ‘Malala, not just a pretty face’ piece at the Maclaurin Art Gallery, Ayr. As her body of work developed and expanded she was able to establish herself as a professional artist and open her own open studio and gallery, Studio 74, selling her paintings to visitors from around the world.
She currently leads a highly successful community-based art group in the coastal village of Ballantrae. The group comprises members from absolute beginners to established artists and they have recently exhibited their work at venues in and around Ayrshire.
She would describe herself as a ‘contemporary Scottish Colourist’.
